In the Star Trek series, the alien Borg have a motto "resistance is futile". However, in real life, resistance is part of healthy training. We complain of hardships and problems which come our way, but if we had no challenges, we might atrophy. You may agree that exercise is a key to weight loss and part of a healthy lifestyle. I was loaned a couple of 2 and 1/2 pound dumbbells, but found them so light that I knew using them was not a challenge. Looking for heavier weights online, I found that shipping was expensive. What to do? Wal-Mart came through with a triple set, meaning pairs of dumbbells of 5, 7, and 9 lbs.The good news was that shipping was free if the weights were sent to my local WM store.
Now there is just the matter of using them regularly. Each level of resistance will make lazy muscles increase in capacity. If I can move off the couch to use resistance training, eventually I will be in a better position to move the couch If necessary, having proved that resistance is productive, not futile. Spiritual exercise may also require some resistance training; we must resist complacency, distraction and firmly engage our mind, will and emotions. As the Bible suggests, we are not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil by good. Let the training get serious.
